Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
